0:10Speaker A we are the Green Industry Couple.
0:12Speaker B Bringing you real conversations, practical education, and firsthand experience.
0:16Speaker A And from the farm and the job site to the classroom and the biggest trade shows in the country,
0:20Speaker B So settle in and let's talk turf.
0:24Speaker A welcome to Turf Talk. Let's get to... Get today's conversation started. Hey, everyone. Welcome to Turf Talk podcast. My name is Eric Jones, better known as the Turf Teacher, and I'm here with my lovely bride, Jennifer Botford Jones, a.k.a. the Turfette. Good morning, sweetie. What are you up to right
0:45Speaker B I find it interesting that you said my maiden name, Bideford.
0:49Speaker A Botford. The Botfords.
0:53Speaker B So what possessed you to say Jennifer Bodford Jones?
0:56Speaker A I don't know. I don't know. I just JBJ. That's what I call you, baby.
0:59Speaker B Well, now everybody knows my maiden name.
1:01Speaker A Well, there ain't nothing wrong with that. People know my middle name.
1:05Speaker A Maybe, maybe not. If you know Eric's middle name, send us a text and I don't know, maybe we'll find a turf teacher hat to send you.
1:13Speaker B That's a good question for most people. Do you really know people's middle name? You'd have to be pretty intimate with
1:21Speaker B that person.
1:22Speaker B not saying a physical intimacy. I mean, just a relationship close enough.
1:27Speaker C know that name.
1:28Speaker B Yeah, to know people's middle names.
1:29Speaker C And some people...
1:31Speaker A go by their middle name if they especially if it's two first names
1:34Speaker A you know the first name and middle name but my middle name is not a first name it
1:40Speaker B your, your middle
1:41Speaker B name is interesting.
1:42Speaker B You were given a last name, a surname as a middle name,
1:46Speaker B which I found that kind of odd, but yeah, yeah.
1:51Speaker B never, I've just never heard anybody take a surname and give it as a middle name.
1:56Speaker A I know quite a few people, but,
2:00Speaker A that's messed up. No, in my military career, yes. But, you know, I know people that have two last names.
2:09Speaker B That has become more prominent in the last couple of decades because a lot of women trying to exert their independence and refusing to take their husband's last name. I am not of that mindset. I
2:24Speaker B am proud to take your last name.
2:26Speaker D Well, thank
2:27Speaker B there are women that hyphenate. Like for me, it would be hyphenation of Bodford slash Jones, you know, and if that was the boy's last name, their last names would be like Jared Bodford slash Jones, but that's not what we didn't, we did not do that with our kids, but I just find
2:45Speaker B that interesting.
2:46Speaker E Yeah, I do too. I do too. One of my favorite landscape architects to install his plant materials had to last night.
2:54Speaker A names and his last name his first name was my last name Jones Abernathy great guy so retired landscape architect yeah
3:01Speaker B I've never known anybody to have two last names and I've never known anybody to have a last name as a middle name until you however I did have a classmate growing up in high school that she had three names first and two middle names and then her last name
3:17Speaker A well remember when we bought the Dodge trucks in the fleet We bought it from the guy. They advertise it, the man with two last names, Smith Stokes.
3:27Speaker B So crazy. That's confusing what that is.
3:30Speaker A Can be, can be.
3:31Speaker B That's confusing.
3:33Speaker A Anyway, guys, welcome to the show. It's going to be fun. We had a opportunity or we have been invited to an opportunity to be on another podcast. And you want to tell them who those guys might be? Hey.
3:47Speaker B Well, interestingly enough, we met these gentlemen two years ago. And really connected even more so last year at Equip Expo when
4:00Speaker B we were at the prayer breakfast. And we've got a little bit of a history with them doing some radio stuff together. So I'm really excited to tell you guys that we're going to be featured on the Turf Nerds next podcast for Tuesday, October the 6th. So keep a lookout on their social media and of course we'll reshare the link. link when it's posted, but yeah, Eric and I are going to be guest speakers on the Turf Nerds podcast.
4:26Speaker A Yes, and I really I think a lot of Greg and Evan, you know, being believers, being followers of Christ, which is first and foremost. And so. Being connected with other believers is what we're all about. So, yes.
4:41Speaker B You and I are in a season where our faith is taking 100% precedence, as it should.
4:50Speaker B And because you and I made that decision to prevail in our business and specifically in our networking and who we hook up with as far as doing business networking with. We want to be around like-minded believers,
5:06Speaker B and God has really opened doors. We said we wanted to take turf teacher and turn what we're doing into more of a ministry. On top of what we're already doing. So it's definitely been a kind of a brainchild of ours and really moving more towards making our faith more prominent in this industry. Because I think we're in a society where faith can be questionable for some people in
5:42Speaker B the sense that some people are afraid to show their faith. faith. And then there are people who are not afraid to show their faith and I would
5:49Speaker A I like to think that you and I are the people that are not afraid to show our
5:53Speaker B no. I wear the Jesus saves t-shirts and I always got a cross necklace. You've always got a cross necklace. I wear a cross bracelet and there's nowhere that I go that I don't have a Bible with me. So that, um, that has really taken a forefront in my life. And I give a lot of that credit to you. God put you in my life and he worked through you to get to me. So, and that, that means a lot to me. And guys, let me tell you something. I know we work in the green industry. We work a lot of hours. We struggle with finances sometimes, you know, we haven't had time to invoice. We may have priced a job too low and we didn't make enough money.
6:42Speaker B So the stress of running a business can be brought home. But guys, let me tell you first and foremost, I will be the first to tell you when you start putting Christ first at everything, he puts everything else into place. I had to learn the hard way. I had to learn the hard way. When I started putting Christ first. And our marriage, Jennifer? Look what it did.
7:10Speaker A It did. It has changed the atmosphere in our home.
7:16Speaker A You were already an amazing leader. You were already an amazing provider and a great father. But when you put Christ first and put the order in the way it was meant to be biblically, there's been such a big shift in our home since you and I've been married. And I've seen... I've seen a huge change in you since you gave, you fully gave your life to Christ and got baptized last August. And I have just seen a huge change in you. You are, I see you desiring more of learning the Bible and understanding the Bible.
7:57Speaker B I crave it. I don't like using this term, but it's almost, you know, I'm addicted to Mr. Pibb. I try to shake that soft drink habit, but I crave the gospel. I crave the sermons. I crave the preachings that we hear. And so... I've become addicted to it, I would say, and what a great addiction to have as our Lord and Savior and to hear the word. And again, I thank you for that.
8:33Speaker A Well, I, again,
8:35Speaker A like messenger, I was
8:36Speaker B you're the messenger through God.
8:38Speaker A just used as a tool in your life. God, God allowed our paths to cross for a reason. Yeah.
8:44Speaker B And I want to go back on putting the right. order in your life. When you put Christ first, everything else falls right into place where it's supposed to be. And it takes work, guys and gals every day. You got to renew your mind.
9:00Speaker C A hundred percent.
9:01Speaker B You know, we speak 50,000 plus words a day inside of our heads to ourselves. Jennifer by herself in her own head can speak 50,000 plus words a day. And I'm sure it's. Or some people would want to say that's probably a much higher number if they knew me. But yeah,
9:20Speaker D Hey, you still talk in your sleep. You
9:23Speaker B on average, on average, each of us speak 50,000 words a day to ourselves inside of our own mind, our own headspace.
9:34Speaker B And whatever you're speaking to yourself is what comes out and that's how you live is your mindset. Whatever your mindset is, is how you present yourself.
9:44Speaker B So if you are presenting a negative mindset, it's going to affect your business. It's going to affect your marriage. It's going to affect your parenting. It's going to affect your friendships, all your relationships. But if you are working to keep a positive mindset, you're going to see positive changes. And
10:03Speaker B it's biblical because... Romans 12 2 says and be not conformed that means don't form yourself don't don't be of the world be not conformed to this world and I love the next line but be you transformed by the renewing of your mind and you're probably asking okay well how do I renew your mind well you renew your mind by getting captivity of your thoughts
10:31Speaker B And whatever you're thinking, you put those thoughts into captivity and you subject them. to Christ.
10:39Speaker B Now your thoughts, you give them to Christ and now they're under Christ's control, but you've got to give God control of your mind and you've got to give control of your thoughts and your actions. And it all starts with your mind and your mind is a huge, huge, huge tool in your life.
10:58Speaker D Yeah. Well, and the one thing that I've noticed ever since, like I said, I got saved. and baptized. I still had some fallbacks with some music that I listened to in the army, but what have I stopped doing?
11:12Speaker B Well, you've lessened some of that music,
11:15Speaker B and I'm not saying all of it's bad, and I'm not saying all of it was terrible, but you've lessened what you're feeding yourself. And I want to go back to what you said about drinking. Mr. Pibb, whenever you feed your body, your body starts to crave it.
11:32Speaker B And sugar is very addictive.
11:34Speaker D very addictive.
11:34Speaker B there's a whole study and you guys can Google it and look at it yourself. And most of us already know that.
11:39Speaker A Sugar is very addictive. So whenever you feed your body, your body starts craving. So when you cut sugar out. and you start feeding your body healthy things guess what happens there
11:49Speaker B You want it
11:50Speaker A a yeah there becomes a whole brand new transformation of your body now your body is starting to crave clean healthy things I've experienced this myself when I cut out certain foods and certain sugars and certain things in my diet and I feed myself certain things when I go back or have a fallback or what we call backslid back Back into something I enjoyed that my body's not really supposed to have. I don't feel good.
12:18Speaker A me feel yuck. So whatever you feed your mind is what your mind starts to crave. And music is a powerful tool.
12:29Speaker A music in high school and in college. You know, I pursued to become a music teacher, so I studied music. Music is a very, very powerful tool.
12:40Speaker A There is a study that has been proven that people who have dementia and Alzheimer's and even stroke patients who cannot verbalize a sentence word for word. But can sing a song. That's how powerful music is that even Alzheimer dementia and stroke patients, the musical part of their brain is still intact and they can still remember songs,
13:05Speaker A they can't remember their family member's name. That's how powerful music is. So I say this from a heart of somebody who loves music. I thrive in music. I love all music. There are some music I can't listen to. Just because it's not my flavor, but I want to say this, whatever you're feeding your mind is how you're going to operate in your day. So if you start your day off right, exactly.
13:30Speaker F You're going to have a good day.
13:32Speaker A Positive affirmations, put it in the Bible, pray, you know, start your day off with prayer and supplication. You're like, Jennifer, what's supplication? That means putting yourself in the word, read the Bible, read,
13:43Speaker A feed your mind what it needs. needs to be fed and
13:46Speaker A you are setting yourself up for success and I know that there's people listening that may not be religious don't believe in Jesus or may not even have any faith whatsoever but I want to encourage you that when you invite jesus christ into your life it
14:03Speaker A is a radical radical change yes
14:07Speaker H For the good. For the best.
14:09Speaker A for the best thing that ever happened to you now is your life going to be perfect no it's not going to be perfect so don't expect everything to turn perfect everybody be coming up roses and daisies it's not going to happen you're still you still live in the world you still live in this flesh and things are going to go wrong but it's how you handle things
14:26Speaker A But know your mind. Watch what you feed your mind. Because whatever you feed your mind. You feed your heart, and once on the heart comes out of the mouth,
14:37Speaker A and what comes out of the mouth affects where you go, what you do, who you hang out with, what you say, what you surround yourself with. So be careful what you feed your body, but if you put Christ first and foremost in your life, there becomes a radical change because 2 Corinthians 5.17 talks about... That a man being a new creature, behold, all things pass away. Behold, everything becomes new. When you put Christ number one in your life, he changes you. And I've seen that change in you.
15:10Speaker A And you can take this and turn it on turf. Let's talk about grass. Talk about agriculture. Talk about anything green industry. Whatever you feed the soil is going to feed the grass and it could be negative or
15:22Speaker A be positive. positive.
15:24Speaker D Depending on what time of year it is and what chemical you use, what pesticide you decide to put out, it's 100%
15:31Speaker A I have a question for you, turf teacher.
15:33Speaker D ahead turf
15:34Speaker A was the original landscape architect slash farmer
15:41Speaker A slash slash?
15:42Speaker D irrigator Everything.
15:45Speaker A Everything.
15:45Speaker D Creator. It was God, our Lord and Savior. Yeah.
15:49Speaker A God started it all. Open up Genesis 1 and
15:53Speaker D then find it was
15:53Speaker D on the third day he created turfgrass.
15:55Speaker A He sure did.
15:56Speaker D So, guys, if you really want to get technical about the green industry, read Genesis. I mean, it's amazing, those
16:06Speaker A about irrigation.
16:07Speaker D Yeah. Yes. And I did not know this, but we were talking about it. But in church and they were talking that did it really rain in there, you know, some scholars, you know, they it's kind of like us talking about should we bag grass or not bag, you know, or side discharge it. You have some biblical scholars that say there was rain before the flood and others saying that there wasn't. But Genesis definitely speaks about there was a mist that rises from the ground to water. The foliage and the grasses and
16:41Speaker D the trees,
16:41Speaker A and the feeds yielding seed and
16:43Speaker D the whole nine yards. So God made pop-up sprinklers and rotors to water the earth.
16:51Speaker A and they weren't guys they were not plastic irrigation sprinklers
16:56Speaker A out a of the ground
16:57Speaker D Rainbird or Toro out there.
16:58Speaker D It was a mist.
16:59Speaker A god god calls a mist to come from the ground to water all the living seeing foliage and herbs and seeds and trees and grass and pull your Bible out.
17:10Speaker D And read it and
17:12Speaker A encourage you, I challenge you to pull your Bible out and read about
17:15Speaker D I can remember the very first moment that you and I started talking about that. We were at the beach. We were sitting on the beach at night. And I don't know if it was our turf teacher class or it was when we went with the kids.
17:28Speaker A I think it was when we were there for turf teacher and
17:30Speaker B I think it was.
17:30Speaker A we were standing on the beach you know at night listening to the waves and you pulled out your phone and we started reading Genesis there on on the beach and we were like Wow. Like God was the first landscape architect, landscape contractor, irrigation contractor, farmer, I mean, greenhouse operator. I mean, he made it all happen. And to relate that to what we get to do and to still take care of his creation is such an honor to be a part of this green industry. It was cool.
18:08Speaker C Everything in our life always comes back to who our creator is.
18:18Speaker C If you don't know who the creator is, I challenge you to get to know who he is
18:22Speaker C because he's
18:22Speaker C real, he exists, and he's there. We may not be able to see him in flesh form, but I could promise you God is real, Jesus Christ is real.
18:33Speaker A have felt him. I have seen his miracles. I have felt the work that he has done in my life. It's prevalent every single day and in landscapers. Guys, trust me on this. You wake up in the morning and you read a devotional or you read some scripture or you take a shower and you listen to gospel music or put on some preaching. You know, I, you know, you're, you're probably more apt to listen to gospel music. I'm going to find a preacher that I like and listen to that. I don't even listen to music on the way to work anymore. I'm listening to my favorite pastors and catching up on what they talked about, you know, in their, you know, Sunday morning services. So that to me is where I renew my mind.
19:22Speaker A I have the best day. If I wake up one morning and I'm way too busy and I can't start my morning off that way, things just doesn't go the way I plan them to. But when I put God first. The day just runs smooth. It doesn't mean that I'm not tired, wore out by the end of the day, but things happen and things get done that need to be done. But more importantly, when I started putting God first, even over you, and I had a very hard time thinking that way, that, you know, Lord, if you love me and you've blessed me with this woman, how can I not put her first? But when I realized, no, God, you come first, our marriage just soared. I mean, we've had a good marriage from day one,
20:12Speaker A but to me it gets better and better every day the more I put God in control and put God first. You seem to... to love me a whole lot more when I'm loving God the way I need to love.
20:28Speaker B I want to chime in on that. It makes it easier to love you when I see you submitting to Christ and loving Christ first.
20:39Speaker B It makes the job of me loving you easier because Ephesians even talks about it. that wives weren't subjection to our husband.
20:51Speaker B mean that our husband is our dictator? Does it mean that he's, you know, your husband's over there beating you over the head and telling you what to do all the time? That's not what that means. It's subjecting yourself to leadership. Your husband is the leader of the home and your partners and your teammates and everything that you guys do as a husband and wife and parents and running your home. finding your home you do it together but
21:14Speaker B at the end of every major decision that we make I always leave the final decision to you and let you pray about it and go to God and then you say babe you know I think this is what we need to do when I see you submitting yourself to Christ and subjecting yourself to Jesus first I trust you more because
21:35Speaker B I know that whatever God tells you, I'm supposed to trust God.
21:40Speaker B It's not so much that I trust my husband. It's the fact that I trust God that he's going to do what's right. And if my husband is submitting himself and subjecting himself to Christ first, then I know that whatever decision that you make is going to be the right decision because I simply trust God.
21:57Speaker A Yes. And so guys, you know, all of you that are listening to this, we challenge you, just pick up the Bible. You don't necessarily have to go to church this coming Sunday. You can start slow. You can start slow. Or if you need to visit several churches, I tell my girls that all the time because... You know, none of our kids go to church with us. They have their own churches and they have found something that connects with them. And we have our own church that you couldn't pull me away with chains. diesel trucks. I'm staying at that church and they will find, you can find the perfect church, but you know, I understand your wife may be a nurse working at the hospital or whatever, and it may be difficult for her to go as a family, go by yourself.
22:47Speaker A But during the week, pick up a Bible, pick up a devotional, start there. That's going to make you crave it and want it and become. fascinated with it and want it more.
23:00Speaker B I want to chime in right there. I'm always going to tell people, get up and go to church. Go to church.
23:07Speaker A You're right.
23:08Speaker B And I'm not saying that to go against you in any way or shape or form or to say something different than you. But I'm always going to encourage people to go to church. Go find a church.
23:18Speaker A service somewhere and go because sometimes it could take somebody saying hello to you at that church to make you want to come back it
23:25Speaker A could be the sermon that the pastor preaches that God might speak through to
23:28Speaker B And I didn't mean it
23:29Speaker B in a negative
23:30Speaker A I way. know I
23:31Speaker B just meant like it doesn't have to be this right
23:33Speaker A get what you're saying so for some people going to church is a scary thing it's a scary thing for some people like especially people who've been hurt by other church
23:44Speaker A could keep them from ever attending another church but yet they would read their bible at home so I am going to encourage you because I know what it's like to be hurt by people I know what it's like to be hurt by people in church because I grew up in church that's all I've ever known um and I am um I am a good example of what it's like for a kid who grew up in church, went to Christian school, went to graduated from Bible college to experience deep hurt from people that I thought I could trust. And I'm not saying it's the whole church as a whole. There was just some people that hurt me in my life and I could have easily given up on God and I definitely could have quit church.
24:31Speaker A But I didn't put my faith or my trust in man because men are fallible. They're going to mess up. They're going to make mistakes. They're not gods. And just because there's a man standing behind the pulpit doesn't make him equal with God. He's just as human as I am. Or church leadership doesn't matter. You don't put your faith and trust in the church leadership. You put it in Jesus Christ.
24:53Speaker A And I had to learn that the hard way.
24:55Speaker B explain to our listeners of what our pastor talks about church hurt and how he describes it in comparison to go into the gym.
25:05Speaker A made this conversation with Pastor Darren one time and you were. He wrote right there with me and he looked at me, he said, he said, Jennifer, I'm going to encourage you to change your vocabulary. And I was like, what do you mean? He said. When you go to the gym and you pick up weights that might be a little too heavy, but you think you can push those weights and you do, and then you end up hurting yourself because you've overdone
25:33Speaker B overdone it.
25:34Speaker A weights you really weren't supposed to pick up, but you did. Do you walk around and tell everybody, I'm gym hurt?
25:40Speaker A Like, man, Jennifer, what's wrong with you? What's going on? You're like, I'm gym hurt. The gym hurt me. No, the gym didn't hurt me.
25:49Speaker A The gym didn't hurt me. My decision of doing something that I probably shouldn't have done hurt me. My decision of marrying the wrong person or my decision to be friends with the wrong people. And trust me, there are wrong people in the church. Somebody's probably sitting here right now thinking, how can wrong people go to church? Why would they even be at church? Do y'all not know or understand that Satan can plant? People in church to cause division and discord. In Matthew, Jesus talks about the parables of the tares among the wheat. Out here in our fields when we plant. our crops guess what comes along with the crop weeds
26:29Speaker B weeds you're
26:30Speaker A and what happens if you pull the weed up and it's wrapped around your crop you're
26:36Speaker B gonna lose your crop
26:36Speaker A going to lose
26:37Speaker B of your crop yeah unless
26:38Speaker A so the best thing to do is just to leave the crop there and leave the weed right where it is until harvest time exactly
26:44Speaker B you use a selective herbicide
26:47Speaker A or a pre-emergent but But seriously, though, Satan can plant people
26:54Speaker B I churches. asked you that the other day. I was like, Satan himself can walk into
26:57Speaker B any church
26:58Speaker B that he wants to.
26:59Speaker A It's not the church that keeps Satan away. It's the authority of the Christian. Who can tell Satan to flee? It's not the church building. It's not even, you know, somebody you sit to next on the pew. It's just you simply calling on the name of Jesus and
27:17Speaker B that makes the devil
27:19Speaker A that authority as a Christian and tell Satan, get thee behind me, Satan. You don't belong here. Get away.
27:26Speaker B he will run when he sees our Lord and Savior.
27:28Speaker A My dad gives this great example. My dad pastored a church for several years. He taught this series and I thought it was really good. But the one thing that stuck out to me was teaching the difference between power and authority. Okay. The best way I can do this is a state trooper. So think about your state troopers. And then the other side, I want you to think about big. You know, big Mack trucks, okay, an 18 wheeler or a big dump truck, okay. Think about that dump truck or 18-wheeler. There's a lot of power behind
28:06Speaker B In that machine.
28:07Speaker A that machine.
28:08Speaker A That machine could run somebody over in a heartbeat and kill them. That's the power behind the machine. But I want you to stop for a second. Now let's talk about the state trooper. What does that state trooper carry? He carries authority.
28:23Speaker B Authority.
28:24Speaker A That state trooper can stop an 18 wheeler simply by telling the 18 wheeler to stop because he has the authority. He doesn't have the power. He doesn't have the manpower, definitely doesn't have the horsepower within his own body or in his little car. Do you think that 18-wheeler can just run him over? But why does the 18-wheeler stop?
28:47Speaker B Because he knows the state trooper has authority and he has respect for that and he pulls over the
28:52Speaker A Exactly. And it's not so much respect as it is fear.
28:56Speaker B authority fear
28:56Speaker A It's a healthy fear,
28:58Speaker A the authority, the state trooper stopping me. I've got to stop because I'm fixing to get into trouble. Anytime a Christian takes the authority of the state trooper, I've got to stop. I'm fixing to get into trouble. authority that they are a child of God. Do you know who my daddy is? Oh my daddy can whip you. Yeah,
29:15Speaker A he sure can. My heavenly father is in charge. And when I say that Jesus Christ is in charge and I have all the authority to tell Satan to flee, you can make Satan flee. He flees not because you are powerful because guess what? Satan is more powerful being than you are. He can inflict harm on you that a human cannot inflict. But we have the secret. And the secret is Jesus Christ who gives us the authority to make Satan flee.
29:47Speaker A So Satan is not going to stop from going into a church building to try to put discord among the brethren. It's going to take the brethren ensuing the authority on that character of a person who's trying to bring the attitude of discord, the spirit of discord, the spirit. Spirit of you know discontentment the spirit of negativity the spirit of control there's so many spirits that the devil uses that are demonic oppressions that can be brought into a church building but
30:20Speaker A guys the church building is not Jesus
30:26Speaker E The people are the
30:27Speaker A people that
30:27Speaker E are Jesus.
30:27Speaker A walk into that church building are the church because our bodies are a temple of the Holy Ghost.
30:32Speaker A So when Jesus is living in you, when you walk into that church, now Jesus abides.
30:37Speaker A He's not there when we leave, folks. He leaves when a child of God leaves.
30:41Speaker E Yeah. You know, I'm glad you brought all this up and talking about the authority and the power. Also. You know, you made it clear to me that the devil knows the Bible inside and
30:56Speaker E that that that caught me because I'm like, you know, why would he read the word of God? But, you know, there God is. The supreme authority.
31:10Speaker A supreme authority.
31:10Speaker E is trying to fight him, so Satan is trying to learn everything about God in his spiritual world so that he can defeat him. But we know that God always wins.
31:21Speaker A You hit the nail on the head. You're former military, so you know this very well. When you go in to take over a situation,
31:30Speaker E Study the enemy.
31:31Speaker A you've got to study the enemy.
31:32Speaker E You know the language. You know their culture. You know everything about them. You know, you have to know your enemy. So, yeah,
31:42Speaker A And Satan knows his enemy and his enemy is God and a Christian. Christian's his enemy. We're not his friend.
31:49Speaker A We are Satan's enemy because we have all the authority as a child of God.
31:54Speaker E Yes, we do. Yes,
31:55Speaker A love it. This is good stuff. You and I were talking earlier about what are we going to talk about on
32:00Speaker A our podcast.
32:02Speaker A He had all these things in line, but you know what? I think God took a different direction in this podcast for a reason.
32:07Speaker B He let it. He
32:10Speaker A is listening to us right now and sir or ma'am, I don't know who you are, but
32:15Speaker B They need to hear this.
32:16Speaker A if there's a nudge at your heart. Maybe you've been thinking about this. Maybe somebody's been talking to you about the Lord. Maybe you've got some questions that you needed answered or maybe you just needed a sign.
32:32Speaker A This is your sign. God is convicting you. He's speaking to you right now. And I hope that whatever the turf teacher and the turf vet says today that... We bathe this podcast in prayer and we lift it up in prayer that God will use it and it be successful in his name, not in our name, but in his name.
32:56Speaker A So whoever's listening today, God put this podcast here for a reason and
33:02Speaker A you know who you are. And if you want to reach out to Eric and I, you can go to our website, turftalkpodcast.com. And it gives you the lengths that you can email
33:13Speaker A and reach out to us. Eric or I would be happy to talk to you. But as Eric's wife, I have seen a huge change just in our home from him taking not just a leadership role because he was already a great leader, but he took and possessed now you take it with such fervor the spiritual leadership. And I appreciate that.
33:36Speaker B Well. One thing military leadership always told me, you cannot be a leader without being a follower,
33:43Speaker B and I am a follower of Christ. You know, he is my colonel. He is my general. He is my first sergeant, my sergeant major. He is all of that combined
33:52Speaker A your chief.
33:53Speaker B he's the chief.
33:54Speaker B He reigns supreme. And so.
33:58Speaker A You know, I used to see these bumper stickers growing up as a kid and my dad made a statement one time and I was like, wow, that's pretty good. My dad hates seeing the bumper stickers that says God is my co-pilot. God is not your co-pilot. pilot he
34:11Speaker B He is the pilot.
34:12Speaker A is the pilot so
34:14Speaker A he's the chief you're
34:16Speaker B Yeah. And you know what? That goes along with what Pastor Roy said tonight in our revival sermon. He says, everybody says, you know, we're all God's children. No, we're not. No.
34:28Speaker A you're either on you have you're
34:32Speaker A either Satan's child or
34:33Speaker A your God's child
34:33Speaker B child. There is no there is no other. fathers there's there's two and
34:38Speaker B you know you're either a you know a father of you know you're a child of god or you're a child of a child of satan
34:44Speaker A And satan is the father of this world.
34:47Speaker A He is the father of this world and God's going to take reign of that one day and satan's going to lose. I mean, he knows he knows his end. Yeah. So guys, if you're listening and you don't have a bobble in your house right now, download it on your phone. You know, what's our app that we use?
35:05Speaker B The U-version,
35:06Speaker A The U-version.
35:07Speaker B Y-O-U-V-E-R-S-I-O-N, U-version. It's a great version app that you can put on your phone that basically houses all the translations of the Bible. I specifically tend to gravitate towards King James because
35:22Speaker B that's yeah. all I've ever learned and read growing up as a kid. English Standard Version is a great version to study by and to compare the scriptures with from King James. The Amplified Version is a great one. But the YouVersion app, the Bible app. app is a great app to use. There's devotionals on there. They do little videos that you can watch. There's even like a devotional series that you can do on there. There's all kinds of choices of different series that you could take part of. But all 66 books of the Bible are on there and you can read it from beginning to end.
35:57Speaker B So if you don't have a Bible, go get you one.
36:02Speaker B And if you don't have time to go get one, order it from Amazon. from Amazon and
36:06Speaker B Walmart sells them.
36:07Speaker A Walmart has some great,
36:08Speaker A great versions of the Bible,
36:10Speaker A you know, and everywhere we go, you know, we're, we're going to the book section to see what's there and we love going to the Christian bookstores and
36:19Speaker B I'm a, I'm a book nerd. If people walked into our bedroom and saw my nightstand, it's like a little library on my nightstand.
36:25Speaker A guys, she reads them all. Like, you know, this woman reads,
36:29Speaker A this woman
36:30Speaker B my books. I can't have enough. have enough books. I have so many books in storage that I want to bring out. But Eric and I, we haunted building a house when we got married because our pastor gave us really good advice. So we decided, okay, we're going to take the advice and we're going to pause it for now. But hopefully in the next couple of years, Eric and I will proceed forward building our house. But I
36:54Speaker A going we'll to have a library.
36:55Speaker A We will have
36:55Speaker A a library.
36:55Speaker B going to have a library. And in that library, every book I own is going up in that library.
37:01Speaker A And I want a prayer room.
37:03Speaker B yeah, you and I talked about that the other day, having a combo music slash prayer slash reading room, no TVs.
37:11Speaker B It's just going to be a piano books and chairs to sit and yeah.
37:15Speaker A i'd love to have a little altar like just to just to kneel and pray but you know what you you don't necessarily have to do that you can pray anywhere i
37:24Speaker B Oh, absolutely. You can
37:25Speaker B get on your knees in the middle of the living room or outside. I said, I've heard a lot of preachers and teachers talk about this throughout the years. It's going and finding a place out in the woods somewhere away
37:37Speaker B from the noise and having a little,
37:40Speaker A be in God's creation, his world.
37:42Speaker B You know, the movie came out several years ago, The Prayer Room, and I watched it and my sister ended up putting one in her house.
37:51Speaker A and that's her hiding place she goes to her little prayer room and it's on the other side of her son's closet and her son's closet there's like a little cubby door go
38:00Speaker A through that cubby door and there's a whole nother room on the other side and that is her little prayer room so nobody knows it's there yeah so she she that's her prayer room she goes in there and does her little devotions and prayer time in there
38:12Speaker B You know, I pray throughout the day. I pray with people throughout the day. But the one time I feel like that I get really involved in my prayer is when I'm in the shower. I think that is my ultimate peace time, you know, because I get up before you do. It's quiet and you want to know why I take a shower in the dark. You know, it's my time with God and
38:39Speaker B to let the hot water run over me and to pray. And many times there's been tears flowing down that cheek just because it's one-on-one time and no disturbance. The dogs aren't even up. So, yeah.
38:52Speaker A It's quiet. It's peaceful. No noise yet. It's just you and God. And I want to go back and correct the name of the movie. I said prayer room, but it's called The War. war room
39:03Speaker A and you will like that from your military experience but if you want to claim war on satan and on sin and on things that are affecting your family the best place to do that is in your prayer room and the movie's called the war room you need to watch it it's
39:18Speaker A really good it's a good movie
39:21Speaker B Well, man, what great conversation we've had talking about the Lord.
39:24Speaker A Yeah, you know, this took a turn and it went down a path that we were not intending for it to, but you know what? God has a reason for that.
39:31Speaker B Yes, he does. Yes, he does. And so he had a reason for the turf nerds to reach out to us, too.
39:38Speaker B Believers and I'm looking forward to being on their podcast and I'm also looking forward to getting to Waterpalooza this week.
39:46Speaker A Yeah, I am too. I'm excited about the networking and providing more deep insight to you guys from people out in the field.
39:56Speaker B Yes. And these are all irrigators. You know, Chris Keaton with Toro. It's always fun to talk to him.
40:02Speaker B Maybe Mr. Shanabarger will be there, you know, from he does the Toro lighting series. Shanabarger. He's also the president of. the landscape association in
40:16Speaker B Carolina so we were supposed to be there this year but the snow and
40:21Speaker B the average
40:21Speaker A and you fell down about 30 steps of huge flight of stairs, which kept us from the Turfgrass Council and the South
40:28Speaker B Carolina green and
40:29Speaker A Yeah, so you
40:30Speaker B God was with me that day because I mean I could have really got
40:34Speaker A could have really gotten hurt pretty bad.
40:35Speaker B yeah and we've been pushing snow for several days And I thought I was Superman. I'm like, you know, I was going to walk down to our exterior basement door and walk down the steps.
40:46Speaker A i'm like i got this and i hit that first step boom and
40:50Speaker B down you went
40:50Speaker A i had my phone in my hand and i just let it go so it would be down there and if i hadn't had my phone with me i wouldn't have been able to call you for help it
40:59Speaker B would have been looking for you wondering where you and i don't think any of us would have ever thought to look down at the bottom stairs
41:04Speaker A yeah and then You know, you had to clean the eye steps just to get down there to help me.
41:10Speaker B Yeah, I was like, I'm not going to try to come down there. So I had to go get a shovel and literally shovel off each stair as I went down because I was not going to fall either. That would have been bad if we both fell.
41:20Speaker A Yeah, you know, and I was only in pain, what, three days max.
41:26Speaker B you were in pretty pretty
41:28Speaker A But those first two days, I couldn't
41:30Speaker B it was rough yeah it was rough
41:31Speaker A hardly walk.
41:31Speaker B yeah they put you on a muscle relaxer and I think that was the biggest thing that helped you but by the third fourth day you were starting to get a bit more mobile and then within a week you were you were good
41:40Speaker A Good to go.
41:41Speaker A But the back brace and everything,
41:44Speaker B that's scared me to death oh
41:46Speaker A you might have been cashing in on that insurance policy.
41:49Speaker B stop it No,
41:52Speaker A again, I'm going to tell you, put God first, you will see a transformation not only in yourself, but when it happens within you, it's going to happen in your marriage, it's going to happen in your business, it's going to happen in your relationship with your children, you know, the ones that are believers, you know, and we've kind of experienced that watch and see era flourish in our growth with Christ. Christ, so it's just Just trust me. As you trust us with your turfgrass continuing education, your irrigation continuing education, pre-licensing courses and landscape contractor credits, trust us on this. Put God first. And as you'll see, Jennifer and I's logo, the stack of books,
42:38Speaker A the Bible's on top. Then it's plant science, soil science, landscape architecture. But we grab that Bible first.
42:47Speaker B You know it's amazing. Amazing that everybody always goes to trust the science. Well, who created science?
42:54Speaker B God himself.
42:56Speaker B do we struggle trusting God?
42:59Speaker A I don't know, you know, same thing with mathematics, you know, people like, well, you know, physics and math proves this. God created physics and math just like he did science, just like he did biology, just like he created everything. He is knowledge.
43:15Speaker A So there's. And my proof with it is we are not that smart. We're smart humans because of what God put in us, but we couldn't have created none of
43:27Speaker A this. And this
43:28Speaker A was all God.
43:29Speaker A And to have had a child, like to be a father and you're a mother, that is the closest to being to God here on earth because he is. bless you with one of his children to raise and to love and to raise and
43:49Speaker B steward and
43:51Speaker A so to to have to have that child in your arms and not be a believer Yeah, you need to take a closer look.
43:59Speaker C You're not in charge of just a life here on earth. You as a parent are in charge of their eternity.
44:06Speaker A Their eternity, yes.
44:07Speaker C And I'm not saying, you know, they make their own choices, but you're in charge of training that child.
44:14Speaker A Groom them, go ahead and say that scripture.
44:16Speaker C Train up a child in the way they should go, and when they're old, they won't depart from it. And I've seen it play out so many times. Many times in my life that children that were raised in church that got away from God and got out of church, they always come
44:32Speaker C back because
44:32Speaker A always come back.
44:33Speaker C it was the training that was instilled in them.
44:36Speaker A Yeah. It's good stuff,
44:39Speaker C Proverbs 22.6, by the way, if anybody wants to look that up. It's Proverbs 22.6. Train up a child in the way it should go, and when he is old, he won't depart from it. So however you train your children, that's embedded in
44:51Speaker C Yeah, good or bad, it's embedded.
44:54Speaker C know, we all look at families, oh, that's such a toxic family. Well, the toxicity was embedded.
45:00Speaker C Pastor Roy Mack preached. tonight on talking about well
45:05Speaker A Getting family members and friends and
45:07Speaker A neighbors.
45:08Speaker C you know having
45:09Speaker C depression you know and it all it takes as a child of God saying enough is enough pray pray with fervor pray with you know desperation pray with travail you know and travailing like having a child travailing pray like you know the world depends on it everything that your kids depend on they depend on you to pray to break those oppressions, the family genetics that could be passed down through the years.
45:35Speaker C I've seen it one too many times.
45:37Speaker A that's true. That's true. And, you know, pastor's father came up talking to me and he's like, Eric, the sermon tonight just proves to me that I haven't prayed enough. And he was tearing up, you know, and he's 100 percent right. You have to pray, pray, pray. I talk to God. Not so much in prayer, just going down the road, hey God, you know, what do you think, how can I be better at this or what do I need to do to improve this situation. He never lets me down.
46:09Speaker C No, he never does.
46:10Speaker A Something happens that lets me know that he is listening.
46:16Speaker C Even I struggle finding time to really have my devotions. Even I struggle sometimes just find the time to pray without being interrupted. You know, this weekend on Saturday, the last three Saturdays. The first Saturday of October and then the two previous Saturdays, our church
46:36Speaker A had prayer meetings at seven or eight o'clock on saturdays for the church for people to come and write down prayer requests on cards and everybody come forward and grab two or three cards and take them back to your seat and pray over them and you and i were not able to go the first two saturdays because we were out of town for business uh stuff so i was able to be there this past saturday you and i were and i was on the worship team that saturday and I can tell you from experience, okay, I sat there and I struggled getting my mind to focus on praying because all I could think about, oh, I got this to do when I get home and I got that to do. I mean, that's typically my
47:18Speaker B That's what yeah,
47:19Speaker A brain was going 100 miles a minute. You know what I had to do?
47:21Speaker A I took those prayer cards and I laid them out on the chair beside of me and I literally. They stuck my hand on top of those
47:28Speaker A prayer cards
47:29Speaker C that yeah.
47:29Speaker A and I told God, I said, God, I am here to pray over somebody else's burdens. I need you to help me focus. I can't get my brain to shut down long enough for me to focus. I literally had to pray and ask God to help me to pray because
47:47Speaker A I was struggling praying.
47:49Speaker A And I promise you after I prayed that prayer. My prayer changed.
47:54Speaker A I was able to focus more on what I was praying about than what I was going to be doing after I left the prayer service. And it's amazing how much better I prayed because I specifically asked God to help
48:07Speaker A I'm the struggling.
48:07Speaker D emotions that that you were having.
48:10Speaker A I couldn't even make it through the invitation song. I had to go back up on the platform to sing through the last song and I couldn't hardly sing because I was I was I was crying. fine.
48:18Speaker A I was moved by some of the prayer requests that I sat there and prayed over. And even now just thinking about it, there's a young mom, I don't know her name. There's a young mom out there in her late 20s that has two children just got diagnosed with two different stage four cancers that are rare and her prognosis is not good. They're giving her less than a year and I can't imagine as a mom and especially a mom of younger children thinking about, oh, what's going to happen to my kids if God takes me home. I've got to change my mindset. And start thinking about preparing my kids for mom to leave this world, preparing my families, preparing myself, you
49:01Speaker A know, making sure that my kids are taken care of. I mean, those are thoughts no young mother wants to think about. That just deeply moved me and some other prayer requests that were on there, but that one specifically stuck out. But I say this to say. I'm not a perfect Christian, and I'm not. I don't claim to be perfect. I don't want to be perfect. I'm definitely not a hypocrite. I don't try to live a life, you know, one way and then my behavior. likes another. I don't want to be that either. I just want to be real and authentic with you. I struggle sometimes finding time to read my Bible. I struggle sometimes with my own prayer life. And the more I jump into God's word, the more peace I have,
49:46Speaker A the more joy I have.
49:48Speaker B So you've got to find the You time.
49:50Speaker A do. You've got to force yourself to find the time. And every time I've done it, it has been well worth my time.
49:56Speaker C Well, remember a week, 10 days ago, Sierra came to us and she was very upset.
50:02Speaker A Yeah, she was moved.
50:03Speaker C Yeah, she was she was tearing up. I'm like, girl, what's wrong? She was struggling with the fact that she had so much homework being in college that she wasn't finding enough time for her devotionals and Bible time and even being able to go to Bible study because the workload being, you know, that high, I mean, being a junior,
50:23Speaker A yeah, it's a lot of work.
50:24Speaker C she's she's working hard and she's not having enough time. So you got to find the time. You've got to put God first and then he lets everything else fall into place. all into place.
50:35Speaker A I will tell you my advice for what's helped me personally is the kind of music I listen to. If I'm struggling in my day dealing with people, dealing with negativity, dealing with kids, dealing
50:49Speaker A or you. No, no, just kidding. Um, but if I'm struggling. I can pray and ask God to help me, but what backs that up for me is turning on music. And for me, music speaks to me and it softens my mind. It slows me down internally, spiritually, and it always calms me. Listening to gospel music, and it could be any gospel music you like. It doesn't have to be hymns. It doesn't have to be Southern gospel. It could be contemporary Christian. But listen to something that lifts Jesus' name up. came up and praise can
51:24Speaker A reset your mind every time and it calms my spirit. I notice sometimes if we've had a bad spirit in our home because
51:32Speaker A of it discord,
51:34Speaker A good music on and
51:35Speaker C There you let go.
51:36Speaker A Jesus just envelop
51:37Speaker C Let the demonic Christians
51:38Speaker A your home.
51:39Speaker C this house.
51:40Speaker A Yes. There's power. There's power in Jesus's name.
51:44Speaker C Yeah, it is. And I love hearing you sing. To me, being in church with you now over two years, I know the songs and I can sing them without looking at the words on the screen. And that makes me happy.
52:04Speaker A Makes me happy to see you sing.
52:05Speaker C just be standing out there singing but when and when my when when i'm by myself i may not listen to to the christian music i'm listening to sermons um you know my favorite pastors other than pastor darren pastor matt and brother will at church but i have my favorite youtube pastors which are who are true pastors they
52:25Speaker A just have a a major social media presence and they are reaching tons of people that way and they've they've really helped me so
52:34Speaker B I just want to say there's nothing wrong with certain music that you have fun with,
52:40Speaker B you know, go to weddings and everybody's
52:43Speaker B having a good time. There's there's nothing wrong with that. What what my advice is or what I would caution you. is a steady diet of the wrong music is
52:54Speaker B not good you
52:55Speaker B need to balance it out um and you know i i love the old singers and standards like frank sinatra dean martin
53:03Speaker B buble i love 90s country because that's what i remember as a teenager there are some 70s and 80s music that i enjoy listening to um but you just got to be careful with what you feed your mind in a constant basis, you
53:19Speaker B know, a steady
53:20Speaker B diet of that. Just be careful. But, you know, I just want to speak Jesus over everyone that's listening, over anxiety, over fear, over depression, over addictions, over whatever you're struggling with. I'm going to speak Jesus over you today.
53:36Speaker A 100%. Well, I love it. We have had a blast talking about this. I think we need to wrap up the show and get ready for Waterpalooza and
53:45Speaker B get her done.
53:46Speaker A Get her done. We'll have some good pizza tomorrow night with all the gang at Carolina's Irrigation Association as we're getting up together for a pizza party. And then we have Waterpalooza the very next day and I'm looking forward to hearing some NC State professors. and industry experts and and we're going to get to interview them so we will have them we will have those episodes here on turf talk podcast and we'll actually have an additional podcast that we're going to create just for waterpalooza 2026 so i'm looking forward to to all of that so hope you are too that's
